The Two Most Important Changes to Make to Increase your Happiness

So many of us go through life with nagging little inconveniences or even major problems that interfere with the day to day quality of our lives, and we never do anything about them. With the new year approaching, it is time for all of us to resolve to improve our lives by systematically removing these annoyances, and replacing them with positives that will add to our daily happiness and the happiness of those around us.
First, when we wake up in the morning, have we had a good night’s sleep? Do we wake up refreshed and ready to face the day, or do we awake after a night of fitful tossing and turning with aches and pains that come from an uncomfortable mattress? One of the best things we can do improve the quality of our lives is to make sure that we wake up energized and ready to go. If instead we have trouble sleeping because our mattress is old and worn out or because it was never comfortable to begin with, then it’s time to throw it out and get a new memory foam mattress. Memory foam mattresses help to reduce painful pressure points caused by conventional mattresses that can prevent us from ever being truly comfortable in our own beds. Getting seven to eight hours of restful sleep each and every night should be on everyone’s list of New Year’s resolutions.
Similarly, we need to make sure we are taking care of our health. A healthy body allows us more freedoms to do the things we enjoy doing. We need to make sure that we are eating a healthy diet and getting enough daily exercise to keep our bodies in peak physical condition. We can all get healthier, and we’ll all be happier for it if we do. Exercise need not be spending hours at the gym every day. It can be as simple as go for a walk or spending time gardening. Exercise should be chosen with the goal of providing a higher level of activity than we are used to. It should be enough to get our hearts pumping a little faster, and maybe even get us breathing a little harder, but need not bring us to the edge of absolute exhaustion. Over time, as our bodies become more accustomed to the new activities, we’ll find them easier and easier. That’s when we need to increase the effort another notch to make sure we are continually improving our fitness level.
A healthy and well rested body sets the stage for all the other improvements we want to make in our lives. With this basic foundation, we should find ourselves better able to focus on our daily tasks, better able to stay calm under adversity, and enjoying a higher level of contentment every day. Once we’ve got these two basic improvements down, we can start listing and removing all the other little things that get in the way of our happiness.
