Down on the Farm with CCTV

When you think of Closed Circuit TV you generally think of it in the context of surveillance and security. While it is true that the main use of CCTV is for security purposes, there are other reasons for installing a good CCTV system. Anyone that has ever made an investment knows it is wise to protect the investment lest it becomes lost or damaged.
A couple of generations ago it was almost acceptable for teenagers to sneak up to farm gas storage and swipe a tank of gas. Farmers generally made little to-do over gas theft since gasoline was very cheap. Nowadays, the entire attitude about any sort of farm theft has changed. The high cost of equipment and fuel has resulted in farmers using security systems such as CCTV to protect their property.
Farms generally have many outbuildings used for storage of tools, farm chemicals, machinery and crops. Barns may house livestock and feed, all of which can be very valuable. Hay storage may be a pole barn or enclosed barn that when full represents quite a large amount of money. Generally speaking, farms are tempting targets for thieves looking to steal fuel, tools, chemicals, whole equipment or machinery parts.
CCTV cameras installed in and on farm buildings are a very good surveillance method for owners who wish to deter and/or make record of criminal activity. Today’s CCTV systems are capable of wireless, IP based operation. Digital cameras have made the latest CCTV system images very clear and sharp as opposed to the older video taped, blurry images. The latest CCTV security systems are available in continuous or motion-activated models.
Closed Circuit TV surveillance is frequently used on breeding farms and by individuals that wish to monitor their livestock. Have you ever spent the week getting up hourly every night to check on your over-due mare in the barn? If so, a CCTV system is an alluring thought. You can set up cameras in her stall and monitor from your beside; you get more sleep and she is not disturbed hourly. Cattlemen can monitor their herds with CCTV. Situations such as calving, theft and predator problems are addressed quicker with the remote supervision a CCTV can provide.
The main advantage that CCTV surveillance provides is of course, security. Farm and ranches by their nature are not located in crowded areas. It is the lack of crowding and often the very remoteness of a place that makes security a critical issue. There are those among the criminal sector that would perceive a farm or ranch as an easy target because there may be no close neighbors to potentially observe any bad activity. Every farm or ranch that installs CCTV for the outbuildings, machinery and livestock should certainly have their home and parking areas protected by the system as well.
CCTV security is a very common, reliable method for protecting property and life. Whether you live in an urban setting or down on the farm, closed circuit security is a great choice.
