LASIK

LASIK, or Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis, is a surgical procedure that is meant to reduce an individual’s need for contacts or glasses. The procedure, which is performed by a licensed and trained eye doctor, will forever change the shape of the cornea, which is the clear covering of the eye. The procedure can be executed with a mechanical blade or- more recently- a laser device, with which the surgeon makes a tiny incision in the cornea, thereby creating a small flap. This can then be folded back to reveal the stroma, which is also known as the middle section of the cornea. Utilizing computer generated pulses from a laser, the stroma is reshaped to create a more vision appropriate curve and then the flap is folded back into place.

Just as with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks that should be discussed with an eye care professional prior to undergoing LASIK surgery.

Loss of vision can occur in a very small percentage of cases and is unable to be corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or surgery.
Debilitating visual symptoms, such as glares, halos, or double vision are also possible complications, which may or may not diminish as time passes.
A slightly more common symptom, but still only occurring in a small minority of the patients, is Dry Eye Syndrome, which leaves eyes unable to maintain moistness, can cause lasting discomfort, and can even reduce vision.

LASIK surgery is intended for persons eighteen years of age or older, suffering from nearsightedness, in good health, and willing to take a small risk to reap potentially great rewards. Individuals who suffer from immunodeficiency diseases should avoid LASIK procedures as the medications prescribed for such diseases can prevent proper healing from the refractive surgery. Athletes-specifically boxers, wrestlers, martial artists, and those who partake in similarly combative sports- should not undergo such procedures while participating in these events. Any blows to the face could be highly detrimental post-surgery. Similarly, activities that would expose a LASIK patient to dust, dirt, or infection should be highly avoided for two weeks after the procedure, as should swimming pools and hot tubs.

LASIK surgery is a relatively new technological advancement, therefore the expected resilience of the results is not completely known. Results have varied in those who have undergone this procedure in the past and some have had to resort back to corrective lenses or glasses, but still at only a fraction of the magnification power of pre-surgery prescriptions.

LASIK, like most refractive surgeries, is not usually covered by typical health insurance. However, the expense for LASIK is declining, making it more affordable and budget friendly and new vision insurance plans are beginning to cover some or all of the cost of the surgery with some stipulations.

Ever since insurance began as a commercial industry with the intent to protect cars, homes and people against unforeseen circumstances, people have been trying to defraud insurance claims. Insurance fraud is done with the intent to unfairly obtain payment from the person that is insured (or their insurance company). The motive of most false insurance claims is almost always financial profit.

When someone recovers money falsely from an insurance company, the insured gets a nick on their insurance record and is therefore charged more for insurance in the future. Also, the insurance company pays out funds illegitimately. When the insurance company has to spend money wrongly, those expenses get passed off to the consumers as higher rates. These fraudulent claims account for a large portion of the claims that are currently received by all insurers. It accounts for billions of dollars every year.

A lot of insurance fraud occurs when someone’s property is over insured. When the amount issued is greater than the actual value of the property that is insured, it opens up opportunities for insurance fraud. The person holding the property and insurance can intentionally destroy the property knowing that the payment received will be greater than what the property was worth. This is sometimes hard to avoid too if the insurance company or their agent encourages being over insured to increase profit margins. However, the insurance company can also be susceptible to the fraud because these claims can be made to look like any other claim and will be paid without anyone knowing it was intentional.

There are many types of insurance fraud and they occur in all areas of insurance. The most common form of insurance fraud is inflating of loss. It is impossible to put an exact value on the amount of money that is stolen from insured persons and insurance companies through fraud. Because of the nature of insurance fraud, it is designed to be undetectable. There is a seemingly infinite number of insurance fraud crimes committed that are never discovered. It is estimated that between 3% and 10% of health care insurance is fraudulent which amounts to close to at least $51 billion. It is further estimated that 10% of the property and casualty insurance are fraudulent and this could result in up to $30 billion.

Often, insurance companies have an entire department that investigates insurance fraud. Most of the time these companies have on staff or employ outside private investigation firms to help them investigate the parties and circumstances surrounding the claim. These insurance investigators handle claims in which the insurance company suspects fraudulent or criminal activity. These cases can involve arson, inaccurate workers’ disability claims, staged automobile accidents, or unnecessary medical treatments. The severity of insurance fraud cases can vary greatly and require these investigators to use the utmost discretion. They also must keep accurate records to use as proof later. Sometimes the person making the claim was simply overstating damage to a vehicle. However, these cases can range all the way to complicated fraud rings supported by dishonest doctors, lawyers, and even insurance personnel.

Within headings, fonts are often treated more liberally, and designers may wish to choose more outlandish styles for text. For the most customized and truly visually-impacting text, however, the creation of images is often required, and this use of text is most readily seen in header graphics and other major structural site images. Relying on the ability of pictures to load (and creating accurate and comprehensive alternative text entries for images to provide a backup), designers can incorporate the fanciest of fonts into major titles and site names, creating strong initial visual impressions without making content difficult to read or potentially unavailable.

When sound choices are made in regards to website fonts, visitors are bound to appreciate the resulting blend of visual appeal and readability. Though it can be challenging for designers to meet the needs of their design clients while also creating a site that is compliant with modern web standards and which is likely to allow for a superior user experience, taking care to implement the seemingly trivial element of font will greatly improve both the polish and panache of any web project.

Upon graduating high school, many people ask the question “do I really need a college degree?” Those who think the answer is “no,” step right into the work force and get busy with life. There is certainly nothing wrong with that, but it puts these people at a huge disadvantage for earning potential over the course of their professional lives.

According to the US Census Bureau, a person with only a high school education can expect to make an average of $34,000 a year. That sounds like a lot of money when you are young, but try having a mortgage, car payments, and raising children on such a salary. The more education you get, the higher your average earning potential. Those who spend two years getting an Associate’s degree can expect to make $46,000 a year. Those who spend four (sometimes five or more) years getting a Bachelor’s degree can expect to make $65,000 a year. Is education starting to sound like a better option? It even gets better. Those who go beyond the Bachelor’s degree to get a Master’s degree can earn an average of $83,000 a year. For the truly elite who stick it out to get a Doctorate or other post graduate degree, the average salary jumps to $103,000. Not too shabby, eh?

Of course, these are averages. Depending on your field of study and the job that you accept after graduation, your salary might be higher or lower than the average. However, the simple truth remains that those with college degrees will most definitely earn higher salaries than those who only graduated high school.

How much more money are we talking about? If a high school education gets you $34,000 a year and a Bachelor’s degree is worth $65,000 a year, there is an annual difference of $31,000. That is a lot of money for one year. Over 30 years, the difference is even bigger. The high school education is worth $1,020,000, while the Bachelor’s degree is worth $1,950,000. That is a big gap over a lifetime. Taking it further, a Master’s degree is worth $2,490,000 over 30 years. Won’t that give you a better, more comfortable life than giving up on school right after high school?

Not everybody is suited to graduate level education, so it is not realistic to expect everybody to get a Master’s degree. But, most of us are perfectly capable of getting a Bachelor’s degree in a field that we are interested in as long as we are willing to put in the work. Without a doubt, the work is worth the effort. The benefits of a college degree start with salary, but also include having a larger selection of available jobs, education that puts you above the competition, and giving you an opportunity to advance as you gain work experience.

If you have put together an effective trade show display then you will have plenty of people coming up to your display during the trade show. You will likely not be able to give everybody personal attention, so how can you make sure that every person who visits your display has the necessary information to get in contact with your company later if they want to know more about your products and services or want to purchase something? Getting top placement in search engine results is difficult in the best of times. Competitors are always trying to one up the other guy to achieve that number one spot. They say it’s always better to give than to receive, but let’s be honest here… Receiving gifts is pretty nice, isn’t it? Somebody took the time and effort to buy you an something to celebrate an occasion or an event. What could be better than that? If you have a lot of friends and loved ones, keeping track of all those gifts and the events that they commemorated might become difficult. How about having it engraved? Many gift items can be engraved. Glassware, picture frames, items made of wood, items made of crystal, and even things made of metal. How much more special will it be if it has the date and a personal note that can be read for as long as the item remains? Personalized gifts, especially personalized glass make special presents for anybody.

Most gift items can be engraved. If you are buying your wife a picture frame, you can make it say whatever you want. Perhaps put a note wishing her a happy anniversary and remark on which anniversary you are celebrating. Engraving a message to commemorate the occasion of the gift ensures that it will hold a special place in the owner’s heart for as long as it lasts.

In addition to the normal items that people think to have engraved, a host of others exist to choose from. Nobody would ever think to put a message on a peppermill, but having one marked will give the owner a special feeling every time it is used. Coat racks often blend into the background of a room, but if you etch somebody’s name on it and the date of a special event, it becomes a special gift with meaning.

The act of having a gift personalized turns it from a simple item into something with meaning. Every time the owner uses the item, he will be reminded of how much you care and how special that day was. How can you ask for any more than that in a gift?

Exercising with your Dog

According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, an estimated 50% of dogs in the Unites States are overweight. Just like adults, our pets could use a little more exercise. With it being New Year’s Resolution Season, many of us are vowing to get fit for our resolution, so if you are looking to get into a new exercise routine, why not help your dog out and find a few ways to incorporate your dog into your new exercise regimen and both of you can lose a few extra pounds just in time for swim suit season!

One of the simplest and easiest exercises you can do with your dog is to take a simple walk. Walking is one of the most highly recommended exercises for beginners and experts alike. Get out that leash and harness and take your dog with you. Go to a local park with a good walking trail and enjoy walking with your dog for recreation and exercise. Extend your dogs outside potty breaks with a brisk walk around the block. Make sure when you take your dog out for walks for exercise do not forget to take your plastic bags with you. It’s likely that your dog will need to relieve himself while you are outdoors, so please be a responsible pet owner and pick up after your pooch.

Once you know your dog can handle a nice run, you can take your dog with you when you go for a bike ride. Be sure your dog can handle this much exertion before you try to tackle a long ride. If your dog wants to get out and run, but you are not up for a bike ride, find a local dog park and go play some fetch. Throwing a ball or toy is great exercise for you and will entertain your dog for quite some time.

Another fun trend are boot camps designed to train your dog and get you both some exercise at the same time. If you would like to take your dog out for more outdoor exercise but he or she is not great on a leash and does not pay attention to your commands, sign up for a dog boot camp that will get you both the exercise you need and teach your pet some obedience lessons at the same time. A well-behaved and trained dog will be a much better exercise companion.

Your dog will likely benefit as much (if not more) from a little exercise as you will. If you have resolved to lose a little weight or get into better shape for the New Year, you might as well take your loyal companion with you for a little company and help improve his or her quality of life at the same time. As with any new exercise regimen, please make sure that your pet is in good enough shape to start out at the same level as you and do not over do it. Work up to a good pace and be sure not to over exert your pet.
